If one will speak of Gamescom 2012 as a “hot fair” in the future, it is not because it would have shone with spectacular new announcements or playful highlights, but because it was simply pork-warm. The sun shone on the Cologne exhibition complex for five days, briefly transforming heavily frequented containers such as Hall 7 into tiny mini-cavities consisting of sweat, body odor and stagnant air. It's hardly about games anymore.

If you can remember our last year's summary, you may still have our displeasure in your ear: it was too disorganized, too little visitor-friendly, too closed off, 2011, probably the most disappointing gamescom since the industry fair was founded. That has clearly improved, so much can be said. The stands looked more open, completely framed FSK 18 bunkers, which hide the actual game behind meter-high advertising spaces, were hardly anymore.

With Hall 10 there was finally something that we sorely missed last year: interaction. In the early days of the Leipzig Games Convention, sport and games were an integral part of the fair, which was simply rationalized away in 2011. Now there were go-kart tracks, laser tag systems, climbing columns, quiz games etc. For many, this was the only real alternative to having fun at gamescom, provided that queuing for hours was not to be seen as the culmination of entertainment.

Because one thing has not changed, of course: the waiting times. Eight hours, nine hours, ten hours - from "Dishonored" to "Crysis 3" queuing was the order of the day, and not too tight, sometimes well beyond human pain limits. As always, the rather small titles benefited from this: If you can't get hold of “Assassins Creed 3”, you can try an unknown title that is not overrun. Like "Hawken". Or "Firefall".

It becomes bizarre when visitors flock to free-to-play titles like "Aion 2.0". Some kids drive hundreds of kilometers to check out the latest gaming hits at Gamescom, and then they find themselves out of space before games that have been free to download online for months. It almost seems as if the "big ones" cannibalize each other and inevitably draw attention to the smaller competition.

The visitors know how to help themselves: if you are unwilling to sneak through narrow halls, you play wherever possible. Or not. In fact, almost all of the visitors, fans and GIGA friends we interviewed always answered in the same way: “Are there eight hours for Assassins Creed? Without me!”Many use Gamescom for something different: to meet friends or people with whom you may have been playing in the clan forever but have never seen them. Gamescom is an ideal place for this. It brings people and their hobby together.
