Nokia Lumia 1020 Review

We looked at the flagship of Nokia from a purely photographic point of view, without paying much attention to the other properties. We were only interested in one thing, the photo function and whether it can convince. Nokia itself advertises with the saying: "PHOTOS LIKE A PROFESSIONAL", of course that we take a closer look.

Looking at the technical data, the first thing we noticed was the sensor size. Yes, the megapixels are already fat for a smartphone, but what sensor size are they spread over? A sensor with a size of 1 / 1.5 "is not only an absolute exception with smartphones, even in most Digi-Cams they are smaller. For comparison, the Canon PowerShot G16, Canon's top model for the compact, has a 1 / 1.7 "sensor. Thus, the Lumia 1020 is on par with the high-end compact cameras.

Nokia does a bit tricky, because if you set the recording format dng (RAW format) in the menu, you get "only" 34 megapixels (38MP wrongly said in the video). That is still a hell of a lot and still made us curious.

Setback in the main setting for photographers

You can really set almost everything manually on the "camera". No matter whether white balance, focus, ISO, exposure time or brightness correction, no problem. Only one thing cannot be influenced: the aperture. It always remains fixed at f / 2.2. A bitter setback for a photographer, since the aperture is the most important stylistic device for a photo. It decides on the image look and determines the depth of field.

We were also a bit surprised by the noise behavior, because with ISO100 it shouldn't be that strong, since compact cameras are much better. It is all the more surprising that the noise is very low, especially at high ISO levels such as ISO4000.

Conclusion

All in all, considering the Nokia Lumia 1020 as a smartphone, it still has a strong camera. With the possibility to take pictures in RAW, there is still enough room to get the most out of image processing. Due to the high resolution, the photos can then be compared to a compact camera. We give the Lumia 1020 4 out of 5 GIGA G's.
