The direction of thrust is wild or violent when you describe something or someone as “savage”. But in the internet, the term is used a little more: You could best translate it as "absolutely crazy", "ruthless" or "crazy", but also as "impressive".
Depending on the situation, alternative English words would also be "crazy" or "cool". What is meant, however, is something like “wild, like a big cat from the jungle”. It's about raw, uncontrollable powers. In Germany we might say "a force of nature".
At the same time, there is also the use as a noun: "A Savage" can be translated as "legend" or "hero", or - to describe someone negatively - also as "plague". How the term is meant also always depends on the situation and who uses it.
"Savage" is not yet very common in German postings. For us, the term would possibly replace adjectives such as "blatant" or "extreme".
In normal usage, savage is usually used in English-speaking areas to denote wild animals or "wild animals" outside of civilization. Sometimes also to describe a ruthless, cruel person.
