The shooter is as simple as it is short. 20 levels, more than two minutes per section are not necessary. Due to the sometimes crisp level of difficulty and the repetitions associated with it, a playing time of one to two hours adds up. Unfortunately, the game doesn't give much more, but it only costs 9.99 euros.

Whether the short playing time is worth the investment depends heavily on the type of player. High Hell is definitely fun, but in a direct comparison with the Miami hotline - a comparison that the game cannot avoid - the game always loses out. The same flow never results, the soundtrack never pumps as much adrenaline into the arteries as in the top-down alternative, there is only one weapon, hardly any diversity with the opponents and the basically unique scenario remains unused. Still, High Hell is anything but a letdown - much more a short, intense roller coaster ride.

However, what the game is perfect for is the hunt for high scores and ever faster speed runs. At the end, the points are added together and the time required is counted down to the millisecond. The best prerequisite is to measure yourself against other players and to outperform them. It is all the more surprising in this context that High Hell does not offer a leaderboard that enables this comparison. In addition, a level editor and its connection to the Steam Workshop could provide an almost endless supply of levels. So far, Devolver Digital does not seem to be using both chances.

Anyone who talks about old school shooters cannot avoid Doom:

Summary and conclusion

HighHellReview

High Hell knows exactly what it wants to be, a wacky, detoxified, uncomplicated and short roller coaster ride for shooter veterans, who need breakneck speed and pixel-precise aiming and who can confidently do without unlocks and story. This is exactly what the game can do for a good hour, but after that the fun is over. The detailed, high-score hunt is actually made for speedrunners, but features like a leaderboard or a level editor for new challenges are missing.

You'll like it if you like fast, uncomplicated old-school shooters and speed runs.

You won't like it if you expect more than an hour of play for 10 euros.
