It remains true to the Glory Kills known from 2016: If an enemy has taken enough damage, it begins to glow and can be killed with a special melee attack, the Glory Kill. The opponent then drops all kinds of colorful power-ups that regenerate your life energy. A clever design trick that ensures that the player in Doom always stays on the move and does not unnecessarily hide behind covers.

Doom Eternal builds on this concept, but consistently extends it, so that the chainsaw and the flamethrower also become an integral part of this rotation. We give Glory Kills life energy, the chainsaw spits out ammunition and the flamethrower provides you with armor.

Conversely, that means keeping an eye on your resources and making decisions every second to manage your life energy and ammo. As before, the one or the other items are of course also distributed in the level, but during my almost one-hour play session it became clear that these are more of a makeshift solution. If you don't use the different glory kills, you won't get very far in Doom Eternal.

Small is (sometimes) better than big

And what does all of this have to do with Tetris now? I would like to explain that: In my eyes, Tetris is a complete game. Each of the seven Tetris stones has a meaning, nothing is missing, nothing is superfluous. Should a stone be missing or an eighth stone added, Tetris would no longer work.

When I played Doom Eternal I had the same thought when I repeatedly found myself choosing the weaker of the two shotguns. Why would I ever do that when there is a much more powerful alternative? Because the "small" shotgun does just the right amount of damage to standard zombies to perform a glory kill.

For other opponents, the large, double-barreled shotgun is again exactly the right choice - just as there is a particularly well-suited weapon and strategy for every opponent. In addition, the weapons also have secondary fire modes, which also give you a tactical advantage. The secondary fire mode of the Heavy Cannon, for example, is ideal for deliberately separating body parts from opponents such as the Arachnotron or Mancubus.

So while you will undoubtedly shoot from full pipes over the entire playing time, in the back of your mind you are busy analyzing the situation, controlling your resources, choosing the right weapon and preparing the right glory kill every second. This makes the game, which is extremely fast anyway, a lot more demanding - but also better?

In my less than an hour of Doom Eternal I had a lot of fun without question, even if the first few minutes of the game were overwhelming. Nevertheless, after the end of my time, I was somewhat grateful that I was allowed to give my head a break. The already fast gameplay, coupled with the constant tactical decisions, could lead to headaches, especially during longer sessions.

Could - but doesn't have to. After all, it is just as possible that after just a few hours there will be the same flow feeling as in 2016, and the glory kills will be carried out completely automatically, as in a trance. Just like Tetris. Doom Eternal will be released on November 22, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
