Perhaps the biggest surprise when I try it for the first time is the 2v2 mode. Because small-scale online duels are waiting here. Two teams of two fight each other in the "Gunfight" mode on the smallest maps so far. The so-called "Flash Maps" are so small that you can run to the other end in seconds.

But that would not be a good tactic, because Permadeath prevails in the fast rounds. If you die, you only get on again in the next round. In every 2v2 round, the weapon is strictly specified for both teams. You'd better talk to your comrade to win with six victory points. The games are completed in just a few minutes and will ensure repeated rounds of revenge.

Great battlefields

The opposite of 2v2 is called 20v20 - 40 players in two teams fight for dominance. The "Battle Maps" specially made for this mode are correspondingly large. Although they don't look as big as typical Battlefield areas, they always remind of the first person shooter rivals. With large groups, for example, you can conquer tactical points and entrench yourself in important positions.

The gameplay itself always remains true to itself: running, stalking, aiming, evading, reloading. All of this is known from previous parts of Call of Duty. Conventional game variants such as team deathmatch or domination with twelve to twenty online soldiers are also on board. Still, everything in Modern Warfare looks a little different.

After all, the makers deliberately avoid unrealistic acrobatics such as the climbing routes known in previous years or the double jump. Realism is the magic word that soaks in every nook and corner of modern warfare.

Authentic use of weapons

The feeling of holding a real weapon in your hands is more realistic than ever in modern warfare: the intense recoil accompanied by the crisp gunshot sound and echo give it a more central feel. It's also nice that you can reload for the first time while continuing to aim through the sights.

In addition, bullets also penetrate wooden, plaster and metal walls - but it depends on the caliber. For more stable continuous fire, you can also support your weapon at a suitable point, for example on a metal barrier.

As usual, you can put together your loadout individually before the online battles. Assault rifle, SMG, shotgun, machine gun, sniper or self-loading rifle can be equipped with 60 extras. A silencer, laser pointer, visor, larger magazine or improved barrel can be installed. Nonsensical combinations such as shotguns with sniper sights are also possible.

Lights off, night vision on

Online operations in the deepest darkness are unusual. You can only find your way around with a night vision device. But the noisy view makes it difficult for opponents to recognize and aim. Especially when realism mode is activated in the current round.

Realism mode simply deactivates all screen displays. You don't know anything about your comrades because of missing radar, nor about the remaining ammunition in the magazine. On top of that, it is not even certain whether you have just shot the enemy in sight or whether he is still entrenched in the next cover.

Modern Warfare builds on the principle of kill streaks. The score streaks previously used in the series are a thing of the past. Ergo, as many kills as possible are required to unlock powerful rewards. So you get a supply box, a drone or air support with targeted bombing. On top of that, you grab the Juggernaut suit and really clean up!

Graphically drilled out small wars

Modern Warfare impresses visually with its coherent staging thanks to the new graphics engine. This builds on 60 frames per second as well as the predecessors, but brings far more realistic lighting and shadow play to the areas. In addition, the locatable 3D sound is impressive. Raytracing is also planned exclusively for PCs. The noble "Dark Edition" together with the model of a night vision device in its original size is available for every platform.

It's also nice that Infinity Ward is not planning a paid season pass. Upcoming DLCs should be available free of charge. The bottom line is that Modern Warfare promises varied online battles from small to large. At the same time, the realistic painting is pleasing without excessive hopping inlays. If campaign and co-op mode are just as good, CoD: Modern Warfare has potential in October to become a shooter hit.
