The message looks real at first glance, but you should be taken aback by the web address mentioned: At “www.lidl-de.club” you should take part in a competition. The domain is on an Amazon rental server, the identity of the owner is obscured.

On the website itself, the "participants" are asked a few simple questions that can even be answered incorrectly. At the end you end up on a page that contains two buttons: "WhatsApp" and "Claim voucher". If you tap on the latter, you will get a Spanish error message. The participants should now tap on the WhatsApp button to share the "good news" with 20 other WhatsApp contacts or 5 WhatsApp groups. The forwarded text is:

Fortunately, the data is not processed by the website in this case. The use of the WhatsApp button opens WhatsApp in the smartphone and there you should then forward the displayed message.

At this point, the victims' gullibility is simply exploited. The number of victims is multiplied by forwarding. But in the end it's about something completely different.

The danger of the Lidl WhatsApp chain letters

The danger of such chain letters mostly lies in data phishing. Known websites are faked and recreated with this stitch. You then lure visitors there and tempt them to enter personal information.

This can be account access data, but also name, address, mobile phone number and the email address. In the right circles, such information is worth cash and is used, for example, for advertising calls and emails.

  • Basically, you can assume that Lidl and other supermarkets do not hold such competitions.
  • And even if that were the case, the obligation to redistribute via WhatsApp is not legal in Germany.
  • In addition, these companies would not register such strange domains, but would do it to strengthen the brand in their own website.

If such a message comes, don't fall for it. Instead, warn the sender, send him a link to this article and delete the message!
