There could be something there. After all, you can already read books and newspapers for free because of Corona, Sky offers free streaming packages and Amazon has made some films and series especially for children free of charge.

But Netflix has no such intentions and instead even lowers the streaming quality.

That's why you shouldn't believe it if you suddenly receive a message with a link via WhatsApp that promises you free access to the streaming provider.

First of all, this business model was supposed to try to access the data of the hopeful victims through a cleverly made phishing site. In the meantime, the mesh has changed somewhat: Now entering the link leads to a page in the Chrome Web Store that offers a Chrome plug-in called "Value +". The program is intended to improve search results on Google - by showing advertisements there! The plugin has already been reported as a scam, but is currently still being checked.

Basically, you should always be very careful with such offers.

  • Do not enter critical data combinations without checking whether they are real pages.
  • Logically, as a Netflix customer, you don't have to apply for a free account with Netflix. So it is nonsense if such a page asks for your account password.
  • If you are asked for a user name, an e-mail address and an existing password, you can try entering an incorrect password. The real provider recognizes the error and fraudsters cannot access your access data.

In order to keep the scam going, after the alleged registration you will be asked to send the fraudulent WhatsApp message to 10 other contacts - to activate your registration. Of course you shouldn't do that either. Instead, warn your friends about the lousy trick!
