The Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona focuses on two topics: 5G as the new and fast transmission standard - and smartphones with foldable displays. In this regard, Samsung has received the most attention with the Galaxy Fold and Huawei with the Mate X. However, the large Chinese company TCL also wants to get involved and promises a whole range of smartphones of various sizes that can be closed in the middle. The series does not yet have a name, but at least Hinge has already been titled: TCL DragonHinge. You can see all previously known details in the video shown above.

Since this is a completely new device class, new technologies must of course also be used. With foldable smartphones such as the TCL prototypes, this is, among other things, a hinge in the middle of the cell phones. TCL is apparently particularly proud of this and shows the mechanics in a continuous loop: The smartphones are constantly opened and closed again, as you can see in the video above. The OLED displays are manufactured by the sister company CSOT.

Foldable smartphones from TCL: a concept rather than a reality

It will take some time before TCL will attack with its own versions of a folding smartphone. The manufacturer does not plan to start until next year. Accordingly, the devices shown are anything but ready for sale and hide in a glass case.

In one point, however, the TCL cell phones shown differ from those of the competition. According to the group's own information, at least one of the smartphones will be on the market for less than 1,000 euros.
