Whether offside or not, next to “inside or not inside” should be one of the most discussed questions since the ball was kicked. The offside rule as we know it today in football has been in effect since 1925. In 1990, the offside was lifted at the same level.

But let's start from the beginning. In addition to the basic rule of what is defined as offside, there are also numerous special cases that regularly cause new discussions among football fans as well. The offside in football is defined in rule 11 of the official FIFA regulations:

A player is offside if, when a player delivers a ball from his own team, he is closer to the opposing goal than two defending players

The player standing on the side must have the following characteristics when the ball is delivered:

  • The player is closer to the opposing goal line than the ball.
  • The player is closer to the opposing goal line than the penultimate opponent, or is offside if fewer than two opponents are in front of him at the ball.

A player is offside if and when the ball is delivered closer to the opposing goal than two players of the opposing team. The opposing players can be the goalkeeper or a field player. Both opponents and strikers count as opponents. If a goalkeeper loafs around the field, the offside decision depends on the last two defenders before their own goal.

An offside position in your own half of the game is not possible. There is also no offside in the standard situations of corner kick, goal kick and throw-in. If your own player and the opposing defender are in line, a decision is made at the "same height". There is no offside whistle. All body parts that can be used for scoring are decisive. So if an attacker's toe is above the imaginary line, "offside" is whistled, but arms and hands are not included in the decision.

The offside rule is also abolished if the ball is played back by an attacker (1) , i.e. the second attacker (2) is behind the ball.

Furthermore, a player is not offside if he is closer to the opposing line than the penultimate opponent, but is behind the ball, e.g. B. when an offensive player passes back.

Again and again one speaks of "passive offside". This rule applies if an attacking player finds himself in an offside position on the field, but does not actively intervene in the game. If a player is at the corner flag while the ball is played in the penalty area by other players, there is no offside. For an offside position, the player does not necessarily have to touch the ball. Rather, it is sufficient if the player is in an offside position directly in front of the goalkeeper and this obstructs the view, for example. Again, the question is answered with "Is this offside" with "Yes" if the attacker without a ball contact influences a situation solely through his position. The "passive" offside is thus eliminated.

What is offside? Definition of the rule - passive offside?

If a player is still in the penalty area, e.g. B. because he had an entertaining injury, the attacker can leave the field and stand behind the baseline. So he lifts his own offside position, but is not allowed to go back on the pitch, but has to report to the referee. On the other hand, defenders are not allowed to sneak off the pitch to put attackers aside. If a player is outside the field behind the goal, the referee counts the player as an active defender who is to be considered for the offside definition.

This is very plausible and understandable in black and white, but in game practice a few fists have already been flown and millions have been burned because offside positions have been incorrectly recognized and the decision to goal or not to goal was made without authorization. The referees must decide within seconds whether a player is offside or not. Although the linesmen on the outside lines help with the decision, they are also people who can make mistakes or have their own judgment. In contrast to the decision whether a ball was in goal or not, in the future it will only depend on the human decision whether a player was offside.
