EU Roaming In England: No Fees After Brexit?

First of all, the good news: Even if Great Britain will no longer belong to the European Union from February 1st 2020, there will initially be no increased roaming charges for mobile customers from Germany when visiting the UK. At the request of the German Press Agency (dpa), the three largest mobile operators in Germany (Telefónica, Vodafone & Deutsche Telekom) agree: 2020 will not incur any roaming charges in England. In the transition phase, Great Britain must continue to abide by EU rules and accept the decisions of the European Court of Justice.

Telefónica guarantees that nothing will change until December 31, 2020. A Vodafone spokesman said that the UK would have to actively exit the EU roaming regime to make a change. Deutsche Telekom referred to the fact that the EU roaming regulation already applies to non-EU countries. For example, the regulation is active in Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein - Great Britain could thus become the fourth country outside the European Union to offer the EU roaming regulation even after the Brexit has been completed.

Roaming traps on vacation in the UK?

On the UK mainland, you don’t need to worry about horrific roaming charges. It only becomes dangerous if you use the island state to take a boat trip, for example. As soon as ships and planes move too far from the terrestrial masts, they often switch to their own mobile network, which works via satellite.

If you use your cell phone via this connection, you can quickly expect a hefty bill. In such special cases, we therefore strongly advise you to switch off roaming on your smartphone. If you have to be available at all times, you should carefully study the conditions for any mobile or WiFi networks on board beforehand.
