Test winner for robotic lawnmowers: Bosch Indego S + 400

The Bosch Indego S + 400 is a smart guy: the lawnmower studies the weather forecast and then sets his working hours - in heavy rain and heat he stays in his charging station. When mowing, it does not drive crisscross the garden, but systematically tracks. According to the manufacturer, the Indego S + 400 is suitable for lawns up to 400 square meters. But you can also give him orders for a partial area. The settings are made via an app. The command to drive off can also be given via the Amazon voice assistant Alexa.
The Stiftung Warentest (issue 4/2020) is also very impressed by the Indego S +: with a score of 1.7 for mowing, the Bosch robot gives you the best mowing result. Like all models in the test, there is a devaluation because of the "sufficient" security, which leads to an overall rating of 2.9. The lawnmowers have protective and detection functions. Such a mower can still be very dangerous for a baby who is crawling on the lawn.
With the Bosch Indego S + 400 you get a great robotic lawnmower. Only babies and toddlers are not allowed to play on the lawn during lawn care.

Crowd favorite: Husqvarna Automower

Husqvarna is the most popular brand in the robotic lawnmower category. This was the result of a survey by Testbild in cooperation with Statista. If you have a large garden, you will find very powerful lawn mowers in Husqvarna's portfolio. And the quality is very good: at Stiftung Warentest, the Automower 105 was on par with the Bosch device.
Here we have selected a newer model for larger gardens: The Husqvarna Automower 315X (2020 version) fights itself through large and demanding gardens - according to the manufacturer, it should be able to drive up to 1600 square meters. The gradient can be up to 40 degrees. If it gets too steep, the robot lawn mower automatically detects it and turns it so as not to tip over. The integrated GPS is the basis for the alarm function: If the Automower is carried by a thief from a defined area, an alarm sounds. Thanks to location, the robot remembers where it has already mowed and where it has not. With the 315X you get the intelligent version of the model, including app control. The Husqvarna mower also has Alexa and Google Home connections and is based on the weather.

Price tip for robotic lawnmowers: Power-G Easymow 6 HD

"Very cheap and simple device," sums up the Stiftung Warentest in issue 4/2020 for the Power-G Easymow 6 HD. Since it received a “good” in the mowing sub-grade and in this core competence lies ahead of models from Gardena and Worx, it is our price tip.
According to the manufacturer, the device is suitable for gardens up to 600 square meters. The range of functions is particularly small compared to the lawnmowers presented above, and its maximum climbing ability is also lower, namely at 25 degrees according to technical data. But if you want to be helped on a lawn without major hurdles and don't want to spend a lot of money on a sophisticated model, you should consider the Power-G Easymow 6 HD. Small disadvantage: It is difficult to get from German dealers.

Robotic lawnmowers in the test: How was tested
The Stiftung Warentest tested the robotic lawnmower for weeks on an area of 200 square meters, including a bottleneck. Almost atypically strong (but of course sensible) for the institution, the main task was included in the final grade in this test: Mowing was taken into account with 50 percent. In handling (30 percent), the ratio of mowing time to charging time was assessed in addition to maintenance and operating instructions etc. In particular, the deficiencies in the area of safety - in all models tested - caused devaluations.

The right robot lawn mower for your own garden
Different gardens present very different levels of difficulty for robotic lawnmowers. The simplest is a square, level surface. A lawn with a tree or a flower island, gradients, different zones, perhaps a second area to which the mower is supposed to find himself via a path with a guide rope, is much more complex. If you have a garden like this, you should pick the test winner or Husqvarna robot or look closely at the technical data for your personal model: Will the lawnmower be able to overcome the hurdles?
There are also functions that make the robot a little more independent. All good robotic lawnmowers find their way back to their loading point alone. But if the models are also to start independently, they need information such as the current weather and time slots in which they can work. Such products are usually controlled via an app. There are a few devices with and without intelligent functions, see for example the Gardena Silent city, an orderer from Amazon. Smart properties promise greater comfort, but this version costs a little more.

What accessories do you need for a robotic lawnmower?
The most important accessories should already be included with the robotic lawnmower: boundary wire with fastening hook and the charging station. The following products could also be needed:
- A boundary wire (see Amazon bestseller) plus additional fastening hooks and cable connectors help where the supplied cable is not sufficient.
- A roof (here the Amazon bestseller) for the charging station ensures that the robot and station are not unnecessarily stressed.
- An outdoor extension cable and / or a protective box for the power cable extension provides the power supply for the charging station.
Automatic lawn mowing - how does it work?
Anyone who owns a vacuum cleaner robot will find great parallels: the lawnmower is waiting for a job at a charging station on the edge of its area of application. Depending on the model, it then drives crisscross or systematically across the meadow. The test winner shown above can be seen in action here in the manufacturer video:
Bosch Indego S: robotic lawnmower in the manufacturer's video
A guide cable around the lawn delimits the area. Reasonable products use a virtual map (e.g. via GPS) to remember which parts they have already mowed and which have not.
The mown grass remains on the meadow and thus serves as fertilizer. In order to only mow a little, a robotic lawnmower - depending on the weather and grass growth - drives over the blades weekly or more often. The cutting height can be adjusted.
Depending on the model, the robot lawn mower will look for its way to the charging station after 40 to 70 minutes. The loading time is usually as long as the driving time, then the mower can turn the next lap.
