The Switch Lite

Nintendo has announced Switch Lite for September 20, 2019. It can no longer be connected to the TV and the Joycons can no longer be removed. Basically, it's a handheld successor to the Nintendo 3DS.

The improved original switch

In addition, Nintendo has also released an improved version of the original Switch. The battery lasts considerably longer thanks to a power-saving CPU. However, the performance of the switch models is the same. You can recognize the improved switch by the packaging, which is all red.

Switch 2: will Nintendo release another pro version?

Despite the "Switch Lite" and the improved original switch, we still ask: Will there still be a new switch model with improved hardware? Something like a " Switch Pro " or " Switch XL "?

While the handheld-loving Japanese in particular will probably be happy about the "Switch Lite" (in combination with the upcoming Pokémon games sword and shield), (future) owners of a Switch will probably look a little sad. There is no official announcement of a more powerful switch like a Pro model.

Many want a more powerful switch that can play games at a constant 60 frames per second and / or 4K resolution. However, that doesn't fit Nintendo's approach. And even if there should ever be a pro model, developers would have to optimize their games in two ways:

  • once for the old (slower) switch,
  • and once for the new (faster) switch.

That alone is an additional effort that makes a Switch Pro model seem unlikely. Basically, our assessment of a switch successor remains with our original assumption, in which we already anticipated the "Switch Lite". To do this, just continue reading the article.

Is there a successor "Switch 2"?

But here it is important to distinguish between a "successor" and another "variant" of a switch to distinguish. While a successor is unlikely, a new variant is very likely.

assessment unlikely

Reason: Nintendo's president speaks of the fact that no " successor " - like a "Switch 2" - is planned. The statement sounds logical.

  • The switch was released in March 2017 and Nintendo consoles have an average lifespan of around 6 years.
  • Accordingly, it would be too early to already publish a successor where the Switch is still selling so well.
  • A successor is therefore not expected until 2024 at the earliest.

However, another variant of the Switch could appear instead of a successor, such as a " Switch Mini " or " Switch XL ".

Is there a "Switch Mini" or "Switch XL" variant?

assessment probably

Reason: Handhelds from Nintendo often get a new variant after 1-2 years. This applied to the following systems:

  • Game Boy> Pocket, Color
  • Game Boy Advance> SP, Micro
  • Nintendo DS> DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL
  • Nintendo 3DS> 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS (XL), New 2DS (XL)

The best way to do this is to look at the releases of the Nintendo 3DS family:

console Release (Japan)
Nintendo 3DS February 2011
Nintendo 3DS XL July 2012
Nintendo 2DS February 2016
New Nintendo 3DS (XL) October 2014
New Nintendo 2DS XL July 2017

One of the following switch variants is therefore likely in 2019 to 2021.

Switch Mini - possible specifications

A Switch Mini with the following specifications would be conceivable:

  • Small version of the switch (handheld mode only)
  • Same hardware
  • No removable Joy-Con controllers
  • No Bluetooth / no support for other controllers
  • Do not make a dock / TV connection with a simple cable
  • Lower price due to less material and production costs.

Under certain circumstances, the "Switch Mini" would be compatible with Nintendo 3DS games. According to Nintendo's gaming mentality, you would then have to buy them (again) from the Nintendo eShop. We strongly doubt whether the old game cartridges will be able to be inserted into the switch - even if it would please very much.

And even if Nintendo has nothing to say about the "Switch Mini", that does not mean that they are planning such a variant.

In the video there are all the facts about the "Nintendo Switch Online" subscription:

Switch XL - possible specifications

The Nintendo Switch is intended for on the go, but the screen could be a bit too small for one or the other. For example, to play Zelda: Breath of the Wild in handheld mode, you need good (or young) eyes to read the smallest font.

The following specifications are possible:

  • Large version of the switch
  • 8 to 10-inch display (instead of 6.2 inches)
  • Same or slightly improved hardware
  • removable Joy-Con controller
  • Compatible with original Joy-Cons
  • Do not make a dock / TV connection with a simple cable
  • Price similar or slightly more expensive than the original Switch.

The YouTuber "My Mate VINCE" has built a "Switch XL" itself, as you can see in the video:

A "Switch XL" is just as conceivable as the "Switch Mini". However, this version is probably less likely because larger compromises would have to be made in terms of portability and battery life.

I myself am very interested in a "Switch XL" and would very likely buy it. What about with you? What special features or improvements should a successor or a variant of the switch have in your opinion? Let us know in the comments section below this article.

But here it is important to distinguish between a "successor" and another "variant" of a switch to distinguish. While a successor is unlikely, a new variant is very likely.

The Switch Lite has been confirmed by accessory product images

Nintendo's President Shuntaro Furukawa said in an interview in January 2019:

So far, no one has thought about a successor, just as little as about price reductions. Less than six months later, the "Switch Lite" was announced. Shortly before, the new handheld-only console was indirectly confirmed by accessory product images of the new console.

Update 2: The "WinFuture" website shows additional accessory images that indicate a new Switch Mini. One relies on a "reliable source".

Update 1: The Chinese manufacturer HonSon has shown pictures that show a placeholder for the supposedly upcoming Switch Mini. One is based on “secret information” and only waits for the official confirmation from Nintendo in order to be able to adapt the accessories perfectly to the Switch Mini. This would indirectly confirm the new Switch Mini, which should be slightly smaller than the original Switch.
