A survey by the Federal Statistical Office shows a distribution of 73 percent in German households for microwave ovens (2019) - around three out of four households in Germany are equipped with a microwave. No wonder - because with a microwave, food can be brought to the desired temperature in just a few minutes, without any saucepan or waiting for the comparatively slow oven.

There are persistent rumors among technical laypersons that using a microwave oven could be harmful to health. That's not the case. Heating food in a microwave oven is harmless to health, as explained by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection in its information brochure (PDF). This applies not only to radiation that may emanate from the appliance, but also to the nutritional value of the heated food, which, if the cooking instructions are observed, can be compared in terms of measurement technology with the changes in value with conventional heating. "Critics who raise a risk of cancer do not provide convincing evidence to science," notes the Stiftung Warentest.

Buying a microwave: the main features

  • Design: There are built-in devices that integrate into fitted kitchens and there are control devices (“free-standing”, “solo”) to which you can assign a place somewhere. The built-in microwaves are not necessarily more expensive, just built a little differently. They have frame elements at the front, which then cover the edges of the installation shaft. The simplest devices only offer the warm-up function and a switch for the power and the automatic timer. The luxury versions come with a warm-up function (microwave radiation), grill (heating element on the ceiling), oven (hot air) and steam oven.
  • Size of the interior: The average size for microwaves is about 17 to 25 liters capacity and a turntable that is about 25 cm in diameter.
  • Power: The strong, household representatives of their class currently have a maximum of 1,000 to 1,200 watts - so you can heat food very quickly. Even weak microwaves still have 700 watts.
  • Range of functions: A simple microwave from the lower price range is sufficient for occasionally reheating dishes from the previous day. With higher quality devices you can also bake and grill, there are even complete recipe collections. Even with daily use, the purchase of a premium model is recommended.

Test winner at Stiftung Warentest: Microwave Bauknecht MW 78 SW

Image

The Bauknecht MW 78 SW was able to secure the test victory in the comparison test of the Stiftung Warentest (17 microwaves with grill, issue 08/2016) with the grade “good” (2.3). The 1,000-watt device "serves the best dishes" and offers "a particularly large number of automatic programs," according to the testers. Handling and environmental properties (e.g. power consumption) are, however, only "satisfactory". All in all, an excellent device - which, however, can hardly be found in stores.

As a Bauknecht alternative to the MW 78 SW, the MW 80 SL comes into question, the technical data of which are comparable to the test winner (also 30 liter volume, 1,000 watts, grill function integrated). The price of the MW 80 SL is around 300 euros.

Test winner at "Kitchen & Household": Panasonic NN CD 87 KS

Panasonic microwave NN-CD87: Space-saving combi microwave (manufacturer's video) Watch Panasonic NN CD 87 KS at Saturn

The magazine "Kitchen & Household" recommends the Panasonic NN CD 87 KS (edition 04/2019, digitally available from Readly). The Panasonic NN CD 87 KS offers 5 operating modes and can prepare "almost anything" where an oven would normally be used. The testers give the grade 1.1 and have nothing significant to complain about. At most, the control buttons on the front were a bit narrow.

With a handsome price of around 400 euros, it is a device of the upper class that is more recommended for the ambitious user. The Panasonic NN CD 87 KS also finds positive feedback on Amazon and has an average customer rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars. One of the buyers mentioned an important aspect: According to the manual, the machine must remain free on the right-hand side - so it is not suitable for placement in a narrow niche.

Watch Severin MW 7848 at Amazon

Among the cheaper models, the Severin MW 7848 is recommended for around 140 euros. The microwave has been chosen by Computerbild as the "price-performance winner" and can always be found at the top of the bestseller "Microwaves with Oven & Grill" on Amazon. The average customer rating is 4.3 out of 5 stars.

Despite the comparatively low price, the Severin device is well equipped: It is a microwave with grill and hot air function (3-in-1), which is "Made in Germany". The power values are 900 watts (microwave) and 1,100 watts (grill / hot air). The data sheet is convincing - but the operation leaves something to be desired. As many customers confirm, you will first have to deal with the operating instructions (PDF) in detail before you can use the Severin MW 7848 fully and correctly.

Compact, simple, inexpensive: Sharp R200

Watch Sharp R200 at Otto

With a volume of only 20 liters, the Sharp R200 is a rather compact device (device dimensions approx. 25.6 x 44 x 39 cm), which remains manageable in terms of functionality. Two knobs on the front are practically self-explanatory: one is for the power (max. 800 watts) and the other for the time (max. 35 minutes) - it couldn't be easier.

In the list of microwave best sellers on Amazon (without grill or hot air function), the Sharp R200 can currently place in the front ranks. With a price of only 70 euros and an average customer rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars, this is certainly not a coincidence. "A simple microwave without unnecessary options," summarizes one of the buyers. One thing you should still know: The user manual (PDF) reveals that the Sharp R200 was already available in 2012 - so it is not the latest high-tech, but rather a tried and tested technology classic. As with the Panasonic, the right side of the device should be free when it is installed.

Finally, a note on the disposal of old microwaves: Microwave ovens are electrical devices and are therefore subject to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act - they do not belong in the household waste! Dealers are obliged to take back the old device. In the case of devices with an edge length of more than 25 centimeters (no longer a “small device”), this obligation to take back only exists when a new device of the same value is purchased. Alternatively, you can also take the trip to the recycling center.
