The Pixel 3a and its larger sister device, the Pixel 3a XL, made the Google smartphones of the Pixel series affordable in 2019. For the smaller model under 400 euros there was enough memory, solid workmanship, a software experience as Google imagines, along with an update guarantee and, above all, an outstanding camera in view of the price. No wonder that the Pixel 3a is said to sell like sliced bread.

According to the GIGA editorial team, the larger Pixel 3a XL model is not quite as popular - wrongly, because the performance data and camera are largely the same. The models differ only in size, weight, display diagonal and battery size. Maybe it's just the price, because the Pixel 3a XL usually cost 50 to 80 euros more.

At the market launch in May 2019, the Pixel 3a Xl had an MSRP (non-binding sales price) of 479 euros, but according to idealo, the historic best price was only half a year later, on the Black Friday weekend, only 349 euros - a discount of a whopping 27%. At times, the online best price hovered around the 400 euro mark. At the end of January 2020 the Black Friday price was almost reached at 355 euros, on February 5 the previous record was finally broken: At Saturn and MediaMarkt you can currently get the Google Pixel 3a XL for 325 euros.

Pixel 3a XL falling in price: access or wait for successor?

We are usually a bit more reluctant to make a recommendation to buy mid-range smartphones; the situation with necessary software updates is often too uncertain in this area. The pixel row is, however, one of a few exceptions. According to Google, the Pixel 3a XL should be kept up to date in terms of security for at least 3 years, i.e. by mid-2022. We expect a successor in the form of a possible Pixel 4a for spring 2020 - of course, no judgment can be given on its quality before the official announcement. Our advice: Get it if you like the Pixel 3a XL and get it at a great price.
