Cowboy is a Belgian startup. The special thing about your Pedelec "Model 2019" is …

  • the design: strikingly modern & simple, almost not recognizable as an e-bike
  • the frame: you rarely sit on a pedelec so sporty
  • the drive: no gear shift, no engine control, nevertheless dynamic e-support.

According to the manufacturer, it is the lightest e-bike with a removable battery and weighs a good 16 kilos. Here in the video I introduce you to the bike and tell you how it rides:

The best pedelec? Cowboy bike in the test

On two days I cycled 30 kilometers to the office in the morning. It was a bit quicker than with a classic bike (a good hour and a half with a lot of traffic in the city center) and I arrived fairly effortlessly. The cowboy bike does not ride by itself. An Uber bike that you can borrow here in Berlin attracts more when starting off and helps more on the go, provided that my feeling does not deceive me. But that doesn't matter: anyone who buys the cowboy bike, who sits so sportily, also wants to be allowed to pedal.

Of course, the cowboy bike is not the only modern e-bike in the hallway that you don't immediately see the engine support - there are even racing bikes with auxiliary engines. However, the majority of pedelecs are still boring and do not work as casually as the cowboy bike: no annoying gear changes, no gear changes that require maintenance, and above all quick start-up and constant support when driving up to 25 km / h. In addition, it gets more exhausting, a support up to 30 km / h would be nice. The off-road mode in the developer software provided to us proves that the bike could. Unfortunately, this is not allowed in Germany.

What does the cowboy bike teach us?

Will the startup bike stir up the scene? Will the cowboy bike really be the iPhone or the Tesla among bicycles? Well, the bike scene is generally very diverse, there is almost nothing that does not exist. The Belgian concept could get lost in the mass of creative ideas. But I don't think so: the developers are committed to selling the bike, you can test drive it in Berlin and Munich. The sales run online, directly, with a modern and informative website. And I can only comment on the price of 1990 euros with: fits!

With such a compelling overall package, the well-known wheel and drive manufacturers have to be careful if they don't want to get under the wheels. I firmly believe that cowboys and similar innovative blacksmiths will accelerate the development of e-bikes and light the top dogs under the saddle. In a few years we will see many more such bicycles on the market, that's what the future of e-bikes looks like. Not only visually, but also functionally.

Why I am not buying an e-bike yet

I still use the classic bike to move at least a little before and after an office day, and I still trust my trekking bike when touring. However, this will not always remain as the e-bike test made clear to me: if the commuting route is longer or steeper, a trailer hangs behind it and / or you wake up in the morning wheeled, a bike like this is a pleasant relief.

There is a first candidate for me with the cowboy bike, as I now know (apart from a few adjustments that I would make). Currently I don't need it and what you don't need shouldn't be bought. In three years, the selection of attractive e-bikes will be significantly larger, but the prices will be lower.

When I switched back to my own bike after testing the cowboy bike, I thought it was broken or had a flat tire. Because it was no longer driving properly. Nothing like that was to blame, just getting used to the engine. Well, a week of e-bikes can really spoil you.
