The main character of the story is the young professor Diana Bishop, who as a historian examines old alchemical books in Oxford. There she happens to meet the doctor and biology professor Matthew Clairmont. Of course, she, who comes from an ancient family of witches who would like to escape, immediately realizes that Clairmont is a vampire.

She tries to avoid the dangerous creature first, but when she accidentally requests a magical document from the library, the events roll over: Not only the vampire seems to be after the book, but pretty much every non-human being in the world - and Diana is the key to the long lost work.

Without realizing it, Clairmont is constantly watching and protecting her, who in turn increasingly falls in love with the unusual woman - a witch who doesn't want to be one. When Diana is "threatened and attacked by her own people", Clairmont takes her to the safety of his native French castle.

But there, too, you are after her and an alliance of vampires and witches kidnaps her on behalf of the non-human congregation to torture her: you want to know how she got the book and what secrets it contains.

After their rescue, Matthew and Diana flee to Diana's American witch aunts, but here, too, they are not safe and ultimately decide to take an unusual step: to travel back in time.

What may not sound particularly interesting now and sounds like "persecution, attack, flight, renewed attack, again flight … and so on" is an extremely dense and exciting story that cannot be spread here without spoiling too much.

The author Deborah Harkness combines high storytelling with a lot of historical expertise. Sky has made the book a surprisingly true-to-life implementation and the selection of actors does the rest to turn "A Discovery of Witches" into a real film tip.

The end of the first season is not the end of the hunt for "Ashmole 782" and as it has become known, Sky has ordered two more seasons from "A Discovery of Witches".

Cast of A Discovery of Witches

The main role of Diana Bishop is played very appropriately by Teresa Palmer, who has played a leading role in "Warm Bodies", "I'm Number Four" and most recently in "Berlin Syndrome".

Matthew Goode plays Matthew Clairmont, the 1,500 year old vampire. The Englishman is best known from various BBC crime productions. Among other things, his height of 1.88 m made him ideal for his role.

Most of the other actors are not so well known, but they are very well chosen. For example, Sophia Myles plays Diana Bishop's mother. In 2008 she appeared on the side of a vampire in the series "Moonlight". Most of the supporting roles are cast with actors that you “know from somewhere, but cannot classify properly”.
