“Apocalypto” takes place in the Maya region at the beginning of the 16th century and follows the protagonist Paw of the Jaguar, who is separated from his family in an attack by local human hunters. "Apocalypto 2": No sign of a sequel

The uncompromising and sensational adventure thriller was a success with both the audience and the critics. He grossed just under $ 121 million at the box office worldwide with a budget of $ 40 million, which is more than remarkable for a subtitled film with an R rating. With these numbers, a sequel actually seems logical - but since the release of “Apocalypto”, there have in fact never been the slightest rumors.

The main reason for this could be that "Apocalypto" is an independent film that has no reference to an existing franchise. While the movie could go on or be decorated by a prequel, from a plot point of view this is not necessary because the story of the characters is complete. In addition, “Apocalypto” in its unique, elaborate design is clearly a project of the heart by director Mel Gibson. Another filmmaker could not easily replace him for a sequel. Gibson himself has lived through a scandalous period since 2006 and has been largely avoided in the industry for almost ten years due to anti-Semitic statements and severe alcohol problems. Only with his directorial work “Hacksaw Ridge” was he able to write positive headlines again and was resumed in the film industry. In the meantime he is busy again and is planning some film projects. A sequel to his Bible shocker "The Passion of Christ" is one of them, but nothing has been reported about a sequel "Apocalypto 2".
