In issue 9/2018 the Stiftung Warentest tested WLAN amplifiers. The AVM FritzRepeater 1750 E received the best grade, by the way across all system categories (see below), with the quality rating good (2.2). The next best device was the TP-Link AC2600 WiFi RE650 with a grade of 2.5.

The AVM repeater scored well in the test with good data transmission, good environmental properties and very good handling. As a discontinued model you can sometimes find it at a good price. Currently, the difference to the successor is not big enough that the purchase would be worthwhile - see below. In general, the test winner FritzRepeater 1750 E is still a good choice and is kept up to date by firmware updates from the manufacturer.

In winter 2019/2020 the FritzRepeater 1750 E was replaced by the FritzRepeater 2400. In addition to the new design, it differs from its predecessor by higher performance. According to the manufacturer, it achieves up to 1,733 Mbit / s with WLAN AC and 600 Mbit / s with WLAN N. In practice, the difference to the predecessor is not so great that a switch would be worthwhile. However, new buyers should take the FritzRepeater 2400 with a small price difference.

If you want to spend less, look at the FritzRepeater 1200 from the same manufacturer. In the best case, the smaller box offers 866 Mbit / s with WLAN AC and 400 Mbit / s with WLAN N. The functions otherwise correspond to the FritzRepeater 2400, the box even offers a LAN connection.

Even if there is an even cheaper repeater, this model gets our price tip. Because the cheaper model is more limited in performance, it does not offer WiFi AC. By the way: In the test of Computer Bild (issue 06/2020, for example included in the Readly subscription *), the FritzRepeater 1200 even received the award "price-performance winner".

Connecting and setting up a WiFi repeater - can you do it yourself?

A WLAN amplifier is best positioned halfway between the router and the place of use. Little technical understanding is sufficient for the installation. If you own a reasonably up-to-date FritzBox and buy an AVM repeater for this, the setup even runs automatically at the push of a button. The operating instructions give the exact process.

What repeater performance do I need?

The megabits per second (MBit / s) specified by the manufacturer call the technically possible of a repeater. In practice, this data is not achieved: the greater the distance between the individual devices and / or the more structural obstacles are in the way, the lower the transmission rate achieved. General recommendations are therefore difficult to formulate. If you want to provide a house with WiFi, where you also stream diligently, you should use a powerful model. In order to improve the reception in a back room in an apartment, a weaker amplifier might be sufficient.

As a result, AVM repeaters are also popular. The only model from another manufacturer in the top 5 from Amazon is the TP-Link TL-WA850RE. The cheap repeater is available for less than 20 euros, but speed and radio standards are moderate (e.g. no WLAN ac).

Is a mesh system a sensible alternative to WiFi amplifiers?

Mesh systems are a network of WLAN devices that synchronize with each other and the connection to the end device is established using the best possible network access. Modern routers and repeaters offer mesh functionality. For pure mesh systems like Google WiFi (now: Nest WiFi), the Stiftung Warentest was unable to find any advantages over routers plus repeaters.

Powerline adapter: For longer distances

Powerline adapters are ideal if the radio transmission is disturbed by structural peculiarities - here the Internet access is transferred to another location in the house via the socket. However, the boxes should be connected in the same circuit, otherwise the transmission power can be severely restricted.

Should I buy a new router instead of a repeater?

If the network in the house is bad in some places, you can first change the location of the router. Even if this does not improve the distribution, the purchase of a new device could be worthwhile.
