Video: Powerbank In Test 2020: Bestseller And Recommendations For External USB Batteries

2023 Author: Sheila Hailey | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-08-25 04:29

With such a small power bank, you don't get very far these days. And yet for years the PNY T2600 has been the battery that I have most often in my luggage. It is simply the small emergency care if the cell phone is unexpectedly empty. This can happen, for example, if you accidentally did not close the camera app. Even if the iPhone should switch off in extreme cold, the power bank is enough to restart the smartphone. Security that only weighs 67 grams.
Otherwise, the technical data of the PNY T2600 are not very spectacular: 1 ampere stands for slow charging, 2,600 mAh does not fully charge a smartphone: when the power bank is empty, the battery level of the iPhone 11 is 51 percent.

Data: 2,600 mAh / 9.6 Wh, Input 1 A (Micro-USB), Output 1 A (USB Type A), weight: 67 grams
Advantages:
Small and light
Disadvantage:
- There is not enough capacity to fully charge smartphones
- Charges slowly
Conclusion: Small and light battery as an emergency reserve, not as a decent energy store.
Anker PowerCore 5000: The ideal compromise for on the go

We took a closer look at the Anker PowerCore 5000 because it is a permanent guest in the Amazon bestseller list "External cell phone batteries". Perhaps one of the reasons for its popularity is that it is available in different colors? Rather, it is rather cheap.
Thanks to 2 amperes for both charging and charging, it moves forward much faster than with the PNY battery: In half an hour, the PowerCore 5000 filled the iPhone 11 to 34 percent. With its capacity of 5,000 mAh, it fully charges the smartphone in our experiment and then has a few percent reserve. The PowerCore 5000 charges the large battery of the iPad Pro 10.5 to 47 percent.

Anker PowerCore 10K Wireless: The power bank with wireless charging

The 10,000 mAh capacity of the Anker PowerCore 10K Wireless provides security: With such a battery to your smartphone in your luggage, you can get over the weekend well, it even charges the iPad Pro 10.5 almost completely. The great specialty of the new Anker PowerCore 10K Wireless: It offers wireless charging. "I don't need it on the go," as many may say. And before you know it, you get into a situation in which you use it: If the charging cable breaks or is lost, if you don't have a suitable connection for your buddy’s smartphone, you can fall back on wireless charging. Another situation: When I dipped my iPhone into the water for a photo, I had to wait a long time before I could recharge it via the charging port. iOS prevented charging for many hours. The wireless method would have been possible again after a short time.
The Anker PowerCore 10K Wireless can also be used stationary as a wireless charging pad. If you are in a hurry, you should still fall back on one of the two USB charging ports: in half an hour the battery charges the iPhone 11 wirelessly to only 13 percent, with cables thanks to 2.4 amps to 38 percent. Important to know: The USB-C connection is only designed as an input, so fast charging is not possible. With such a modern battery, you expect a little more.

- Overall performance of both USB ports moderate, no quick charging
Conclusion: Good all-rounder with wireless charging, attractive ratio of capacity and weight.
Green Cell PowerPlay10: Well thought-out connections

In this attractive class, with 10,000 mAh, we looked at a second battery: the PowerPlay10 from battery expert Green Cell. Compared to the anchor battery, it does not offer wireless charging. The new version of the Powerbank scores with well-thought-out connections that are rarely found at the moment: The USB-C port serves as an input and output. So you can charge the power bank, but also connect your smartphone or tablet. Thanks to Power Delivery, it works quickly: the iPhone 11 was charged to 52 percent in 30 minutes. Quick Charge 3.0 is also supported. However, the capacity seems to be lower than at Anker: Our iPad Pro charged the battery to only 89 percent. It was 9 percent more than the competition.
If you do not yet have a charging cable with USB C (by the way, it is also available from Green Cell) or the devices do not support quick charging anyway, you can use the two normal USB ports (type A). In addition to USB C, the PowerPlay10 can also be charged via MicroUSB. A USB to USB-C cable is expediently included in the scope of delivery.

Ansmann Powerbank 20,000 mAh: Camping for days can come

Much weighs a lot, the saying for power banks must be: The Ansmann Power Bank 20,000 mAh (1700-0113) weighs 392 grams. The reason for this is the proud 20,000 mAh capacity. This is not only enough to charge tablets more than once, but to refuel many smartphones around six times. Anyone who camps in a socket-free environment for several days can use it to supply their smartphone well.
In addition to the high capacity in the aluminum housing, the sophisticated connections are the special feature of the battery from the German company: In addition to two USB ports QC 3.0, there is a USB-C slot. The latter can be used to charge the external battery, as well as to connect the smartphone, as with the green cell power bank mentioned above. Such equipment is currently very rare to find, but useful! Thanks to Power Delivery (PD), the power bank charges up to 3 amps at 5 volts. The iPhone 11 was 52 percent full after 30 minutes.
In addition to USB C, the battery itself can also be connected to the socket via micro USB. So you want the connections on a power bank.

Powerbank in the test: notes
We checked all of the above-mentioned power banks, measured loading times and weighed the product. The information on capacity and the charging standards used are manufacturer information.

How big should the capacity of a power bank be?
The needs are very different - as already mentioned in the article above. If you use GPS on a day trip and don't want to stand there with an empty battery, you can plug in a 3,000 or 5,000 mAh power bank. If you don't have an outlet for five days while camping, it's best to put a 20,000 mAh bar in your pocket. That's enough to charge a smartphone around six times.
Can a 5000 mAh battery fully charge a 5000 mAh smartphone?
No. On the one hand, the manufacturer's specification usually gives the energy that is required when charging the external battery - not the energy that is stored. (This is actually a lazy trick…). There are losses when charging the power bank as well as when charging the smartphone. The reason is the voltage conversion, so that about 15 percent of the energy is lost in waste heat. In addition, power banks retain some remaining capacity to avoid deep discharge. A 10,000 mAh battery can charge a 2,000 mAh smartphone battery around three and a half times.
Is the ampere specification (A) important?
The amperes (A) can be used to draw conclusions about the duration of the charging process. A battery with a 1 A output does not charge a smartphone as much as a 2.1 A port in half an hour - see above. However, the smartphone and power bank must understand the same charging standard. Current power banks and smartphones can do this. The best way is, of course, quick charging via USB C with Power Delivery (PD). Only very good batteries currently offer this, for example the Ansmann power bank above.

By the way: you don't just want to charge your smartphone quickly, but often also the power bank. On the one hand, you need a powerful power supply. The Anker PowerPort III Nano is ideal for on the go. It is small, light and still offers 18 watts via the USB-C connection (PowerDelivery). In order to achieve the shortest possible charging time, the input of the Powerbank must of course also support PowerDelivery.
