The small dash cam from Garmin has the most functions in our selection and is almost like a driver assistance system. It can only be attached to the windscreen with a magnetic holder. If you want to use a suction cup, you can buy one from Garmin. The GPS-supported videos are recorded with a 140 ° wide-angle lens and a maximum resolution of 1440p - but then only at 30 fps. 60 frames per second can only be achieved by reducing the resolution to 1080p, which is usually sufficient. In addition, an HDR mode can also be switched on in order to obtain useful images even in backlight or poor visibility conditions. All recordings are made in 1-minute clips, which are overwritten in a loop as soon as the microSD card is full. The “loop length” cannot be determined here.
The Garmin Dashcam 56 is characterized in particular by functions such as accident detection (G-sensor) and automatic recording by additional features such as collision warning, voice control, a lane departure warning system and departure assist. Overall, the Garmin 56 makes it much more of a comprehensive helper than a simple car camera for around 190 euros.

With the "DR900S-2CH", the Korean manufacturer "BlackVue" (Pittasoft Co., Ltd.) is currently producing the best dashcam when it comes to equipment. At Comparison.org she was therefore declared the winner of the comparison and takes 1st place. G-sensor, GPS, parking mode and a flexible loop function are also available here. The Dashcam stands out above all from the competition because it does not consist of just one camera, but of two modules. This allows the events in front of and behind the car to be recorded. If 1440p is not enough, you can even get 4K UHD with 3840 x 2160 pixels and 30 fps. However, the rear camera only films with Full HD. If you want to record videos at 60 fps, you have to reduce the resolution of the front camera to 1080p (FHD).
Videos can be accessed and managed live with the smartphone via the WLAN module. If you use the cloud service, the DR900S can also be controlled remotely. For processing on the computer you need your own BlackVue software for Windows PCs or Macs. If you are looking for the best overall equipment, you can find it in the BlackVue DR900S-2CH for around 479 euros. Alternatively, there is also a Full HD version.

Buy the best dashcam: what do you need to know?
If you are looking for the best dashcam for your car, there are quite a few things to consider in Germany. On sites like Amazon, you are not only confused by the sheer number of different cameras. The different functions of the devices are also difficult to understand - what do you really need? What should you look out for?
In general it can be said that dash cams with the really necessary features and suitable video quality do not have to be expensive (see Apeman C660). However, if you value special extras such as cloud connectivity, driver assistance systems, GPS, secondary cameras or a particularly high resolution, you have to spend a little more money.
Another problem with the purchase is the legal situation in Germany. There are some rules in this country, many points are legally but still in a gray area and not clearly clarified. In addition, the laws regarding small car cameras sometimes differ greatly from country to country.
What resolution is sufficient for a good picture? How big should the viewing angle be?
If you are looking for a car camera, video quality plays a particularly important role. Usually, a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD) with 30 frames per second (fps) and an image sensor from a well-known brand (e.g. Sony Exmor IMX323) are sufficient to obtain sufficiently sharp videos in normal traffic.
Ideally, your dash cam can record videos at 60 fps. This is useful as soon as you drive out of town at higher speeds or need a better picture in slow motion. If you have to reduce the resolution to below Full HD, the compromise is not worth it.
The camera should have a viewing angle of at least 140 ° so that you can capture all important areas while driving. Depending on the size of your windshield, wide-angle lenses up to 170 ° can also be helpful. Cameras with a smaller angle of view may not cover the entire area of your window.
What additional functions do I need?
Many dash cams advertise with functions such as parking mode, G-sensor (acceleration sensor) and "loop". Strictly speaking, you only need the loop function, which records videos at adjustable intervals and saves them as small clips. If your memory card is full, the oldest clips will be overwritten automatically. At the same time, videos are not permanently saved and deleted promptly, which is of great legal importance. Most cameras have a small battery. This is not intended for continuous operation (often lasts only a few minutes), but for safe switching off and saving after the power supply from the car is lost.
The G-Sensor is generally used for accident detection due to vibrations. Different functions can then be triggered. The "emergency feature" is often activated via this. The current video file is then automatically saved before being overwritten and saved separately. This backup can also be activated manually. Another benefit is parking monitoring. In parking mode, the G-Sensor is used to detect vibrations from outside by people / cars (damage to the car) and then record them. In practice, however, this only works reliably with a correct motion sensor.
Those who just want to record the trip just in case, use a sufficiently large SD card (e.g. 32 GB for about 6 hours of video) and do not need parking surveillance can do without such features.
Are dash cams legal? What is the legal situation?
According to the ADAC, the topic of dash cams in traffic is legally very controversial in Germany, as there are different opinions and judgments depending on the decision level. Car cameras are only permitted to a limited extent in Germany under strict conditions and conditions. The careless use can produce high fines entail.
- From the point of view of the state protection authorities, the permanent, eventless recording of traffic based on the GDPR is not permitted since the informal right of self-determination and the duty to provide information to other road users are not observed. The VG Ansbach also agreed with this assessment (August 12, 2014, Az: AN 4 K 13.01634).
- In general, the permanent recording and publication (e.g. on the Internet) of dashcam video material is not permitted in Germany and can result in high fines.
- According to a judgment of the Federal Court of Justice of May 15, 2019 (Az: VI ZR 233/17), recordings may only be used as evidence in the event of accidents if they are not recorded permanently (loop function: intervals of a few minutes) and only for a specific reason (Accident) were saved.
- The topic of the dash cam remains legally unresolved, as there are still no overarching decisions and, despite the BGH judgment, action is taken differently from case to case.
- Abroad: Anyone traveling outside of Germany with a dashcam should first familiarize themselves with the laws applicable there. There are some EU countries that completely ban car cameras.
