Test winner e-scooter from Stiftung Warentest: The Urban #BRLN

Image

Compared to some premium scooters (see below) The Urban #BRLN by Walberg has relatively small wheels and a narrow running board. But it is the first choice for flat routes: In the 04/2020 issue, the Stiftung Warentest published an e-scooter test. The Urban #BRLN is the test winner and the only model with the grade “good”.

While the Stiftung Warentest praised the "good suspension" and "well-adjustable brakes", the ADAC comparison test emphasized the strong drive and the low weight. Low? Not everyone would like to carry the 15 kilos to the 4th floor. But some other models are actually a few kilos heavier.

We already recommended The Urban #BRLN in winter as a price-performance tip: it is good and at least available for less than 1000 euros.

Test winner in the ADAC e-scooter test: BMW (Kettler) X2 City

The test winner in the comparison of the ADAC from the end of 2019 is the BMW X2 City, it achieved the mark 1.9. The testers praise the confident driving dynamics and comfort provided by the large 16-inch pneumatic tires. With these large wheels, bumps are less noticeable. The speed levels of 8, 12, 16, 18 and 20 km / h are controlled by pedaling. Pressing the pedal continuously activates the cruise control function.

Practical for charging: the battery installed under the running board is removable. So you don't have to lug the heavy 21-kilo scooter to the socket.

Segway Ninebot Max G30D: The crowd favorite

Another e-scooter wins the public: The top of the e-scooter ranking on the price comparison site idealo currently takes the Ninebot Segway Max G30D by Segway. The customers of Amazon and Saturn are impressed by the electric scooter, the average rating is currently 4.4 to 4.8 out of 5 stars. For example, stability, quality and the pneumatic tires are praised.

The China Gadgets site praised the good driving experience and the large battery in the test, but criticized the high weight of almost 20 kilos. As with The Urban #BRLN, however, the wheels are relatively small. The Stiftung Warentest has not tested this scooter.

Street legal electric scooter: tests by ADAC and Stiftung Warentest

The list above lists test winners from Stiftung Warentest and ADAC, as well as a crowd favorite. The description includes information from the testers and their own findings (see, for example, testing the Velix E-Kick 20 on GIGA).

In the Stiftung Warentest 4/2020 test, five of the seven models failed - grade "poor". The bad results came from bad results in the sub-grade "pollutants", "durability" and / or "safety": For example, two products broke after less than 20 kilometers of test drive of two models. In addition to the sub-grades mentioned, driving and handling of the scooters were evaluated.

The ADAC carried out the test of the e-scooters in autumn 2019. Particular attention was paid to:

  • Equipment (weight, footprint, lighting, theft protection)
  • Processing and handling (folding mechanism, cockpit, handlebars, operating instructions),
  • Driving characteristics (stability and comfort; measurements of acceleration and climbing),
  • Safety and durability (stability and controllability; distance measurement of the braking distance).

Buying an e-scooter: what you should know

If you want to buy an e-scooter, it is best to come to Berlin - or another big city with several providers of rental e-scooters. If you drive a few different models here, you get a feel for the idiosyncrasies. The electric scooters drive differently, depending on where and how the control is positioned and how much power the drive offers and how it is set. Some drive sportily, some inconspicuously, some lame. Then you drive the desired e-scooter at the dealer trial - if possible. Other buying tips:

What characteristics should you pay attention to when buying an e-scooter?

If you do not only want to drive the e-scooter on private premises, the selected model requires approval from the Federal Motor Transport Authority. In other words, you have to choose an e-scooter that the manufacturer has equipped and checked in accordance with the legal requirements. The models are marked accordingly in the trade.

The bigger the wheels, the greater the driving comfort and safety - that's our rule of thumb. There are many models that have fairly small wheels. You get stuck quickly even with the curbs lowered.

Some would like to be able to pack their e-scooter in the car or carry it to an electrical outlet. Then you should take a look at the weight and the dimensions when folded.

Amazon, MediaMarkt, Aldi - where do you buy e-scooters?

E-scooters are primarily found in technology retail, i.e. at the media market, and Saturn, and of course also at Amazon. However, not every dealer offers all the important models - for example, the BMW scooter is only available in BMW dealerships and from unknown online dealers. Trying out different vehicles would be good, but is not possible for many sellers.

Discounters such as Aldi also offer a specific model of an e-scooter in campaign weeks. Some of them are only available online. For example, the Velix E-Kick 20 is available from Netto Brand Discount.

How does it work with the street legal insurance?

The e-scooter must be insured and provided with a green insurance sticker. For some dealers or models, insurance is included for one year and the sticker is attached to the scooter. Otherwise, you can book a tariff with more and more insurance companies. For example, Bayerische Versicherung offers liability insurance (e.g. EUR 19.80 per year) and liability including partial coverage (e.g. EUR 39.80 per year). The latter includes theft and vehicle parts insurance.

A helmet is not mandatory, but is highly recommended.

Are there e-scooters that drive faster than 20 km / h?

If you want to buy an e-scooter that can drive faster than 20 km / h, you're out of luck: They do exist, but are not approved for road traffic. For example, you can order the Egret One Ten V3 for the private racetrack around the luxury villa. With that you can fly up to 30 km / h on the snout.

You should know that an e-scooter is not as safe as a bicycle - especially if the scooter has only small wheels. Nonetheless, the 20 km / h feels quite slow on smooth, straight routes.
