The specialization of the models for a certain purpose has long been a matter of course. A high refresh rate counts for gaming monitors for ambitious gamers, while maximum ergonomics is more important for an office monitor. The average price for monitors in Germany is around 220 euros (2018) - you definitely get a good all-round model. If you have higher demands, you can also spend ten times the amount, for example for a calibrated professional model for image processing or a giant screen with 8K resolution. A monitor rental is also available for temporary use, for example from Grover.

Proven for years: The "UltraSharp" series has already produced many recommendable PC monitors. One of the most recent successes is the victory at Stiftung Warentest (issue 08/2019) for the Dell UltraSharp U2419HC, which was able to secure the verdict “good” (2.2) in the size class up to 24 inches. The U2419HC convinced the testers in the most important categories: image quality, versatility and handling are good, the environmental properties (power consumption) are even very good. The office model from Dell shares the throne with the more expensive Eizo EV2457 (approx. 480 euros), which scores with 16:10 format and greater brightness, among other things.

The Dell UltraSharp U2419HC with 4.5 stars also gets away well with the Amazon customer reviews, is even referred to as "almost the egg-laying wool milk sow". In other words, this monitor is suitable for a wide range of uses. However, the 8 ms response time of the Full HD IPS panel is too slow for demanding gamers, which could result in blurring during fast game scenes.

Specifications: Dell UltraSharp U2419HC

  • Screen size: 24 inches
  • Native resolution: 1,920 × 1,080 pixels
  • Aspect ratio: 16: 9

  • Low power consumption (13 watts in operation according to Stiftung Warentest)

Disadvantage:

  • no speakers installed (suitable soundbar AE515 optionally available)
  • 60 Hz refresh rate and response time are not good enough for gamers

The model name " iiyama ProLite XUB2792UHSU-B1 " can hardly be remembered, but you should try it anyway, because this 27 incher with 3840 × 2160 pixels is worth a look. At the Stiftung Warentest (edition 08/2019), the Japanese were only given the grade “satisfactory” (2.8). The absurdly long wake-up time from standby (9 seconds) was particularly criticized.

Image

The office monitor, on the other hand, was rated significantly better at the Prad Internet portal, where the "excellent all-rounder" earned the test rating "very good". The tester Damian Köb praises the ergonomic functions, because the XUB2792UHSU-B1 can be adjusted in height, turned upright (pivot), turned sideways (swivel) and tilted (tilt). The image quality is convincing and, after calibration, is sufficient for image processing tasks in the sRGB color space. The monitor's response times (latency) are good enough that it is sufficient for casual gamers. Interesting detail: A DVI input that has gone out of style was still installed, which is not seen very often these days.

Technical data: iiyama ProLite XUB2792UHSU-B1

  • Native resolution: 3,840 × 2,160 pixels
  • Aspect ratio: 16: 9

The Samsung C24F396FHU can be found at the top of the list of monitor bestsellers on Amazon (as of February 6, 2020). With an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars and 6,347 ratings, this is definitely one of the PC monitors that should be considered - especially when it comes to good value for money. The Curved Monitor is available from numerous online retailers for less than 120 euros.

The curved screen surface can have advantages and is perceived as pleasant by some users, since this creates a kind of depth impression in games. The picture quality is impressive considering the price range, the Samsung C24F396FHU is a usable all-rounder. It takes getting used to the system control, the button field is attached to the back. The 60 Hz VA panel is not the best choice for fast shooters, so you should invest more in a real gaming monitor with a higher refresh rate. For casual gamers, there is nothing against the model.

Specifications: Samsung C24F396FHU

  • Screen size: 24 inches
  • Native resolution: 1,920 × 1,080 pixels
  • Aspect ratio: 16: 9
  • Panel: VA (Curved / 1800R)

Advantages:

  • Attractive price
  • Good picture quality for the price range

Disadvantage:

  • Few connections: Only HDMI and VGA available, no DisplayPort or USB
  • Ergonomics: height not adjustable

For GIGA editor Robert, the HP Omen 25 gaming monitor is a "cheap entry into the world of gaming monitors". Some of the most important features are available: A maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz, "AMD Freesync" support (must also be supported by the graphics card; response time 1 ms, overdrive activated). Conclusion: A good basic equipment for a gaming monitor that costs less than 200 euros (street price). The model is less interesting with regard to image processing tasks, because the built-in TN panel shows contrast and color deviations at extreme viewing angles. GIGA guide on:

If you want to spend less than 100 euros for a new monitor, you should shortlist the AOC 24B1H. With a 24-inch screen diagonal, the budget model is large enough for today's requirements. The Taiwanese manufacturer uses a viewing angle stable MVA panel with fairly slim display edges. At Amazon, the 24B1H is decorated with an Amazon's Choice label and an average rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars.

One of the Amazon customers takes drastic words: "If you don't hit 100 euros, you should be beaten!" We wouldn't agree with this statement, but considering the low price and the generally good image properties, the AOC 24B1H can be used as a simple (second -) Recommend monitor for home office tasks. Demanding gamers and graphic designers should rather spend a little more money in their hands.

Regardless of whether it is DisplayNinja, Techradar or Gameswelt: The MSI Optix MPG341CQR performs very well in tests. The high price (899 euros MSRP) scares off normal consumers, it is clearly a multimedia monitor for high demands. The RGB lighting ("MSI Mystic Light") on the front appeals to the player scene, which can be used to display game notifications. "Its 34-inch size combined with 21: 9 aspect ratio and 1,440p resolution make for a pretty fantastic gaming experience," Whitson Gordon writes at IGN.

Unlike many cheaper gaming monitors, the sturdily built MSI Optix MPG341CQR can also be adjusted in height. Overall, the image quality of the 144Hz ultrawide monitor is very good - there is criticism only in details, such as the brightness distribution or particularly fast-paced game scenes. All testers agree on one thing: The price is absolutely justified in view of the performance, the ergonomics and the setting options. If you get the dream monitor, you should also have a correspondingly powerful gaming PC, whose GPU can smoothly calculate the high resolution. Note: Only AMD FreeSync is officially supported, but G-Sync still works according to Gordon.

Technical data: MSI Optix MPG341CQR

  • Screen size: 34 inches
  • Native resolution: 3,440 × 1,440 pixels
  • Aspect ratio: 21: 9
  • Panel: VA (Curved / 1800R)

Advantages:

  • Viewing angle stable, decent subjective image quality
  • Relatively slim housing design - whereby the manufacturer's description "frameless design" is not applicable

Disadvantage:

  • Ghost images in darker scenes in fast games
  • Requires a strong gaming PC to take advantage of the potential

Monitor features: resolution, HDR, response time, HDCP and more

Monitor datasheets are important, but difficult to understand for laymen. With some basic knowledge, the many abbreviations can be better interpreted and classified. Here is an overview of some of the most important terms:

Resolution: Total number of pixels that the monitor has. This is specified as width × height, for example 1,920 × 1,080 pixels (also: “Full HD”, “FHD”, “1,080p”) or 3,840 x 2,160 pixels (also: “UHD”, “4K”). The resolution should not be confused with the pixel density, which is given in pixels per inch (ppi) and describes how closely the pixels of the monitor are packed together. The following applies to both values: the higher the better - however, the requirements for the hardware (graphics card) also increase, especially for games. For Microsoft Office or similar, Full HD with a screen size of 24 or 27 inches is sufficient.

G-Sync and FreeSync: Technologies that synchronize the signal of the graphics card with the refresh rate of the monitor and should ensure smooth and smooth display in games. Requires a powerful graphics card for newer games. Office monitors can usually only display 60 frames per second (60 Hertz), gaming monitors show significantly more frames-per-second (FPS).

HDCP: "High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection" is an encryption system ("copy protection") that is used for films and series and is intended to prevent recording. Most monitors support HDCP 1.4, which is enough for HD content. If you want to play encrypted 4K content (UHD) on a 4K monitor, you must pay attention to the support of HDCP 2.2 (example: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K or Apple TV 4K on a 4K monitor).

HDR: "High Dynamic Range" means high dynamic range, which leads to a more lifelike representation of light and shadow. HDR technologies such as HDR10 are particularly interesting for games and films, as this can improve the subjective image impression. The chip manufacturer AMD has introduced the "FreeSync Premium Pro" quality class for labeling, which includes the HDR capability of monitors. The "DisplayHDR" logo from VESA or "G-Sync Ultimate" from Nvidia are also useful tips. A current graphics card that supports HDR is required (e.g. AMD Radeon RX 560).

What is HDR? - TECH facts

Panel:Describes the screen type, i.e. which technology was used for image generation. Budget and gaming monitors often rely on TN panels (twisted nematic panels), which are inexpensive to manufacture and have fast response times. PVA and MVA panels (Patterned Vertical Alignment / Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment) have better contrast values and a higher viewing angle stability than TN panels, but have higher response times and are usually somewhat more expensive. IPS (In-Plane-Switching-Panel) panels display colors precisely and are stable in viewing angles - they are also somewhat more expensive and usually not as responsive as TN panels. Put simply, you can use a monitor with a TN panel for games and office activities. If you want to do graphic tasks and attach great importance to the color representation, you are more likely to use PVA,MVA or IPS happy. Depending on the monitor model, there may also be exceptions, for example a TN panel can be surprisingly stable from a viewing angle.

Pivot: Panning function in which the monitor can be rotated into portrait mode. Useful, among other things, for spreadsheets or layout tasks (such as displaying documents in portrait format).

Image
Image

Response time: Switching time in milliseconds that a pixel needs to change its state. The lower, the better for moving pictures in general and fast game scenes in particular. Gaming monitors have a response time of 5 ms or less, while office monitors are slower and can tend to streak in fast-paced games.

Connect monitor: HDMI, DisplayPort or DVI?

GIGA editor Robert shows the differences between the most common types of connection:

VGA vs. DVI vs. HDMI vs. Displayport: Which interface should I use and when? - TECH facts

Use TV as a monitor: is that possible?

That's fine. TV sets and PC monitors are technically closely related and mostly rely on LCD and an HDMI connection. The PC monitor is usually missing the TV tuner and is designed for a shorter viewing distance. In addition, monitors can often be better adapted to the usage situation at the desk (ergonomics). With large screen diagonals, however, televisions are enticingly inexpensive, which leads some PC users to not buy a monitor, but simply use a television. For multimedia purposes (films, casual games) this may be a conceivable option, for office activities (MS Office) and demanding gaming (high refresh rates) it is better to use a suitable PC monitor.

Tube monitor: hardcore gamers swear by image quality

The era of tube monitors is long gone. Nevertheless, one should not think that the thick boxes are outdated in every respect. For example, the hardware fans of Digital Foundry made a hymn of praise for the Sony FW 900 (16:10 Flat CRT) that hardcore gamers should definitely watch. Conclusion: Surprisingly good picture quality for first-person shooters, which doesn't have to hide from modern 4K LCDs in terms of sharpness.

Portable mini monitor: The mobile companion for the laptop

If you live in the smallest space or travel a lot, you should take a look at the category of portable mini monitors. They are intended as a companion for laptops and are connected, for example, via USB Type-C cable for the power supply and data transmission. Some models also offer an HDMI input, so that you can connect a Nintendo Switch, for example.

Remove monitor from tax

Monitors that are used for professional purposes can be deducted from the tax. This is good to know for teachers, students, freelancers, but also employees. In many cases, 50 percent of the costs can be deducted if the tax office specifies a partly private and partly professional use of the monitor (advertising costs). If in doubt, you should consult a tax advisor who will correctly classify your own situation.
