The four additional buttons on the side are magnetically secured and can therefore be freely adjusted on both sides.

Buy gaming mouse: You should definitely pay attention to this

Wireless vs. Wired

For a long time, wireless gaming mice had to struggle with the reputation that they are far from being as reliable in signal transmission as their wired representatives. With increasingly advanced sensors, such problems have long been a thing of the past. The biggest advantage of wireless mice is the freedom of movement that you have over a wired mouse. This can make a huge difference, especially in games that require rapid or jerky movements.

However, wireless mice have one major disadvantage: They need a battery. Depending on the model, the rodents can do without a load for several weeks or even months. Some gaming mice can also be wirelessly charged using special mouse pads to work around this problem. However, there are additional costs involved. If you are bothered by the cable, you can also help out with a mouse bungee.

ergonomics

In terms of ergonomics, the shape of the mouse is particularly important - the majority of gaming mice are only suitable for right-handed users. A symmetrically shaped mouse, however, can also be used by left-handers. There are also different ways you can grab your mouse: palm grip, claw grip and fingertip grip.

Image

The palm grip is used most often. Here the ball of the hand lies on top of the mouse, thumb and little finger are on the sides. The mouse is moved with the whole arm and therefore this handle also protects the wrist and fingers. For maximum comfort, the shape of the mouse should be made dependent on the hand size.

With the Claw-Grip, the hand rests similarly to the Palm Grip, but the fingers are angled. The fingertips are thus lightly on the mouse buttons. Here, too, the whole arm is used for movement. This type of handle is very versatile and works well with most mice.

Image

With fingertip grip, the mouse is only moved by pushing and pulling with the fingertips. A light and compact mouse is particularly suitable for this.

DPI

The acronym DPI stands for “dots per inch” and in this case indicates how many points the mouse can scan within an inch (2.54 cm). Put simply, the more DPI your mouse has, the faster the mouse pointer moves across the screen. Many manufacturers advertise their gaming mice with higher and higher DPI values, but more doesn't always mean better. It is much more important to be able to adjust the DPI value at the push of a button or by software as required.

As far as shooters are concerned, most professionals even swear by a rather lower DPI number in order to maximize the precision when aiming. In addition, many more factors such as mouse acceleration or sensitivity play a role. Ideally, you should try out all the settings until you are satisfied with the end result.

Lift-off distance

This is the necessary distance between the mouse and the surface so that the motion detection still works perfectly. The majority of modern gaming mice are already equipped with optical sensors, which usually have a greater tolerance. With appropriate software, the lift-off distance can usually be configured as desired.

Signal rate

Finally, all mouse inputs must be sent to the computer accordingly. The signal rate indicates the intervals at which this happens. The higher the value, the smaller the delay between entering and executing the command. Here, too, most copies of well-known manufacturers are on a similar level and have a signal rate of 1,000 Hz, which corresponds to an input lag of just 1 ms - this also applies to both wireless mice and those with cables.

Which mouse is best for me?

When choosing a suitable gaming mouse, you should first of all pay attention to the ergonomics. Are you left or right handed and how do you grip your mouse? Depending on how your answers turn out, you should look around for an appropriately shaped mouse. Afterwards you can then think about what additional features you need: replaceable weights, RGB lighting, additional buttons or special software? As a small decision-making aid, we present some typical scenarios below:

Which gaming mouse should I buy?

  • Casual gamers: A simple gaming mouse with two additional buttons on the side and without unnecessary frills should suffice in this case. It would therefore be advisable to use a wired mouse, since these models are usually significantly cheaper.
  • Shooter: If you are primarily in the field of FPS games, one thing counts above all: precision. Therefore, the mouse should have a capable sensor and a corresponding signal rate. In this regard, wireless mice are in no way inferior to their wired representatives, which is why your personal preferences are more important - more freedom of movement or would you prefer an ultra-light mouse with a cable?
  • MMOs: Fans of role-playing games or the like are often faced with the problem that there are too many skills but not enough accessible buttons. A gaming mouse with additional programmable buttons can help here. This means that all skills are always within reach and macros or other functions are just a click away.
